Banks Don’t Like Credit Unions, But You Might

In light of the current economic crises it may be difficult finding a bank you can trust to keep your money safe.  The Christian Community Credit Union is one such place that is good to look into.  There are hundreds of Credit Unions you can research, but this is just a review of one.  Credit Unions are a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. They exist to serve their members – not to profit from them. And Credit Unions do not issue stocks, so their value does not depend on the rise or fall of the stock market. Also, the Christian Community Credit Union was not involved in sub-prime lending.

Their careful investment of funds into the lives and ministries that comprise the membership of Christian Community Credit Union, has provided the members a great deal of protection. Over the years, the Credit Union has had very few foreclosures. By the end of 2008, the Credit Union’s capital ratio was 10.1% and their net income for the year was positive and healthy. Though it is a tough time for other financial institutions, the Credit Union is posting positive earnings. They have low loan losses and they pay good rates.

CCCU believes that the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-”therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”-is just as applicable to our business as it is to each believer’s life. CCCU makes banking simple, convenient and safe.  The staff at CCCU is here to serve you.

The Christian Community Credit Union always gives back to their community and the world. Over the years, the money that Credit Union members deposit into their accounts helps provide affordable financing to churches for new buildings, expanding worship facilities and other properties. These loans make it possible for them to better serve their communities. In addition to assisting locally, the Credit Union has reached out to support missions and ministries around the globe. CCCU has donated, more than $2.5 million to ministries through their “Card that Give to Missions & Ministries” program. The Christian Community Credit Union partners with ministries such as World Vision International and Samaritan Ministries, just to name a few.

This is all great, but lets talk numbers. The Platinum Rewards Visa (the card that gives to missions), has a 0% APR introductory rate on purchases for the first six months, thereafter it becomes a fixed rate of 10.9%. There is no annual fee and you can earn up to 10,000 in CUReward bonus points. Double points for donations to churches/ministries too! For new members there are Kingdom Builder Certificates; 3.25%APY, 48 month term and a minimum of a $1,000 to open. When you invest in the Kingdom Builder Certificate, you help provide affordable financing to churches and ministries who seek to fulfill their vision for growth and expansion. The Christian Community Credit Union serves thousands of members and ministries locally and around the world. CCCU has been in serving its members for over 50 years.

Why bank at a credit union and not at a bank?

Credit Unions:

  • Credit Unions are not-for-profit institutions
  • Can serve only those individuals within their field of membership
  • Have members, each person who deposits money has a share of ownership
  • Members elect a volunteer Board of Directors to represent their interests
  • Democratically controlled by members
  • Are member service-driven
  • Return profits to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings rates and free or low cost services
  • Christian Community Credit Union is privately insured by ASI up to $250,000 per account

Banks:

  • Are profit-oriented institutions
  • Can serve anyone in the general public
  • Have customers with no ownership in the organization
  • Have a paid Board of Directors who represent the owners; customers do not have voting privileges
  • Controlled by stockholders and paid officials
  • Return profits to a small group of stockholders
  • Are federally insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

CCCU has numerous programs and services available to you. One of those great services is the Balance Program. It is a free, confidential, financial counseling and education program. A counselor will go over your finances with you, one on one. If you have debt they will assist you with a plan to get out of it. They also partner with several unique services, such as: Autoland, Liberty Mutual, Monrose Travel and Homesold (a real estate rebate program). The Credit Union also offers discount banking to students, through their Student Advantage Banking program.

Many Credit Unions provide online banking websites.  You can use their online banking website to paid your bills and to view financial statements. Most Credit Unions have direct deposit, but you can also deposit ATMs through a CO-OP network. To take cash out you can go to the supermarket or other stores that allow for cash back so to avoid ATM fees.

So where ever you decide to bank, take into consideration how you want your financial needs to be met, and how your money can be used for a higher purpose.
